Other partygoers include Donald (Matt Bomer), Michael's former flame, now mired in self-analysis; Larry (Andrew Rannells), a randy commercial artist living with Hank (Tuc Watkins), a school teacher who has just left his wife; Bernard (Michael Benjamin Washington), a librarian tiptoeing around fraught codes of friendship alongside Emory (Robin de Jesús), a decorator who never holds back; and a guileless hustler (Charlie Carver) hired to be Harold's gift for the night. Fun fact: This movie is a remake of a movie from 1970 the play originally premiered 1968 (I think) if you watch the Netflix version please watch the 1970 version too. The Boys in the hands. Time for a warning akin to 'shut those damn cellphones off. Great specific analysis, but the finale gets a little botched. The play and film are separated in time almost symmetrically by Stonewall. The film was a victim of timing. I do a little closer look at that here. I also think that a little more analysis could be added to how each of these characters were a rainbow flag of characters that created a variety of archetypes before they were stereotypes, with ranges of camp, femininity, and bitchiness. It's hardly stereotyping when there are such a variety of characters presented. P.S. There was a new dvd blu-ray release of the film made fairly recently (I think 2010? in the U.S. which has been retouched. I'm not sure where you are located or how you edit, but really good copies exist.

Regarding Harold, I may have a different take on the comparison to Michael, who embodies every self-loathing pot hole on the road to gay self-acceptance. Harold is a hero of mine, because in my opinion he has emerged from the other side of stigma; battle-worn, brittle and sharp-tongued, but self-aware, able to cope and learning self-acceptance. He's been where Michael still is, and survived it. Yes, he still hangs on to all of those Nembutols in his cabinet, but he doesn't use them. Hard to describe what a hopeful revelation he was to me the first time I saw this film.
